THE GARDEN

The gardens at Bollingham House were in a forlorn and neglected state when Stephanie and John arrived. However it was obvious to their eyes that the potential was there and with hard work and dedication they could be restored and developed. Their work began.

Stephanie and John cleared, sorted, dug and moved endless plants to make way for their own creation. Now the gardens have really taken form.

  • A perfumed rose walk was made in the once derelict old walled garden.
  • Three parterres were created from an area which overlooks one of the most magnificent views in the county. The parterres contain box hedging, herbs, magnificent weeping roses and rills of water with a final flourish of a 'pool of silence' with a fireman's jet' fountain.
  • In front of the house formal terraces were developed with elegant steps leading you down to the wild flower meadow and the natural pond. A stream then trickles through a bog garden with one of the largest gunnera to be seen and other wetland plants amongst a willow plantation.

The surrounding area has a fine selection of deciduous trees, which make an evening stroll down to the old sweet chestnut a must. During the spring the garden is full of spring bulbs and rhododendrons and azaleas of incredible size and colour. The rose season at Bollingham brings heady perfume with an abundance of blooms

The garden is planned to make it interesting with 'gardens within gardens' but also easy to be maintained.

Stephanie and John hope you will come and enjoy the fruits of their labours and any advice or suggestions are always welcome.
